On the road to Amed

As we left off, we needed a couple days to relax, which means, we spent more time diving,  doing yoga, bike riding, exploring the island, and you guessed it, eating delicious food. We even enjoyed preparing fresh sushi and ceviche from a small Dogtooth Tuna Roy speared one day.

After a few days, we tried to consolidate our stuff, (meaning instead of 6 bags we went down to 5!) said a quick goodbye to our new friends and local staff, then we were off to Amed, a small town on the east coast of Bali known for its colorful and exotic reefs right off the shore with Roy's good friend Greg!

It was an exciting three hour drive, beginning with twists and turns through city traffic then smoother sailing as we escaped the hustle and bustle of the south and ventured further through the luscious green landscapes consisting of rice paddies and palm trees.

We knew it would be a long ride so we bought some munchies on the way... Greg could not decide which cheetos he would like since all the flavors in Indonesia are significantly different from home, so he bought three just to be safe.

(Chicken Grill Flavor, Roasted Corn Flavor, and Amerikan Cheese Flavor... Mmmm)

When we arrived at our accommodation that was recommended from a friend, we were absolutely blown away with the beauty of the place and spectacular view from every standing point. It sits  on top of a hill overlooking the ocean with many small bungalows scattered at multiple levels.

At 300,000 Rp a night (aprrox. $26 USD) we'll gladly "splurge" a little to enjoy this place. With an amazing location, stunning view, hot water, fresh towels, free breakfast, and a beautiful reef out front to explore, it was a no- brainer.

The Amed area consists of a couple small villages, mostly local fishermen and salt producers. Life is quiet and simple here even though western influence is easily observed all around. The main attraction for tourists here is the scuba diving, with scuba shops and cafes dotting the one main road along the coast.

We cant wait to dig in and enjoy what this area has to offer, beginning with a 2 day freediving class that Siobhan and Greg are looking forward to.
